MGT 2204: Global Business of Pop Culture

Read, watch, and study the business of superheroes! MGT 2204 provides an opportunity for students to analyze the global business of pop culture through a semester-long case study of a selected pop culture industry (e.g., superheroes). Students will explore the world of business from a “business in society” perspective, framing businesses as socially-embedded entities and using that perspective to examine strategic decisions. Using an interdisciplinary framework, students will investigate how social, historical, and economic forces shape, and are shaped by, business-decision making at local and global scales.

Why take it?

This course, which is open to all majors, enables students to engage in critical analysis about the role of business in creating a more just global society. The course combines interdisciplinary conceptual frameworks and methods (e.g., content and textual analysis, historical research, etc.) and more typical business tools and concepts (SWOT, environmental scanning, PESTEL, corporate social responsibility, systems theory, strategic thinking, etc.), allowing students to cultivate critical thinking skills through the process of business analysis. This course offers a unique opportunity to explore management at the introductory level through a business in society perspective.

Requirements

There are no prerequisites for this course.

This course fulfills Pathways requirements in Critical Thinking in the Humanities, Critical Analysis of Identity and Equity in the United States, and Intercultural and Global Awareness.
